This is the whitemetal windlass assembly. In my previous modelling life I only used the odd little whitemetal detail, so this was my first go at a more complete assembly. When I'd finished I honestly reckon that in the same time I spent cleaning up the parts, turning things to the right shape and making them all fit together I could probably have scratch built the thing. Getting all the plans and materials together would have been extra of course, but it was an eye opener. Maybe this was a bad example but if I ever need to 'populate' my own boat I would seriously consider making many of the parts rather than buying fittings.
Funny thing is that I was thinking about making this a working winch, but decided not. With hindsight I can see it would not have been much more effort and I probably should have done it. |
