AHTS Hull Build

Rudders 3

Rudders 3

As part of the steering trial I fitted the rudders - or tried to. As seen previously I have fitted the Korts, and therefore the skegs and bottom rudder bearings, nearer the hull, so the space for the rudders is a few mm shorter. A bit of adaptation was therefore needed. Mainly I have taken a bite out of the bottom, but I also found the tops fouled the hull when turned steeply toward the boat centre, so I have angled those to provide good clearance.

As the rudders are hollow I've drilled small holes top and bottom (not visible here) to allow water to drain easily.

I've also decided to stick with the screw arrangement seen here and previously. I have trimmed them to fit fairly close to the leading edge (this picture shows them unscrewed) and once installed and painted they will not be very visible and could pass for oem fittings even if noticed.
