Athearn SD40-2 sound 8

On the chassis the Athearn 'metal' strip electrical stuff was discarded and the bottom contact of the motor isolated from the chassis. Wires were then soldered to the top and bottom contacts of the motor and led to the front (left here) of the loco and onto a 4-pin plug. The two truck contacts were joined with a length of wire as seen and also to the plug, and a hole was drilled and tapped in the chassis (in front of the front flywheel) and a wire screwed on and also taken to the plug.
The bottom motor wire and the truck connector can be seen scooting down the side of the chassis. They are using the extra space on this side due to the walkway being higher here than on the other side (it is a cooling vent duct to the rear motors on the prototype). They are painted black as they are a bit visible if the loco is seen from below the horizontal.
